He's very disappointed when the cat then doesn't stay. It's not until his dog Lobo plays roughly with him that Andrew learns how to be gentle with Maisie and they become firm friends.
My Cat Maisie was shortlisted for the 1991 Children's Book Council of Australia Picture Book of the Year and the 1993 Young Australia Best Book Award Picture Book. It is also on the K-2 booklist of the Premier's Reading Challenge.
